New safety measures on Annapurna trekking route

Annapurna Conservation Area Project is setting up two check posts in Muktinath area of Mustang district and building half a dozen shelters along the Annapurna Trekking route in an effort to further safety measures for trekkers.
These measures have been taken in light of the 43 deaths in Thorung La Pass (5416 m) last October due to a freak snowstorm. The pass is one of the main highlights of the Annapurna Circuit trek. However, there are no settlements on the 15 km route from Manangs Thorung La Pass to Mustangs Muktinath. October being a peak trekking season coupled with the lack of weather forecast and tourists trekking without proper guides led to one of the highest casualties ever recorded in the ACAP region.
The newly introduced check posts will log in trekkers where they will be able to pick up a week long weather forecast along with other information about the trekking route. Data on Nepali visitors will also be maintained at the check post in Manang.
