China agrees $210 m loan for construction of Pokhara Airport

China’s EXIM Bank has agreed to provide $210m in loan for the construction of a new airport in Pokhara, confirms Airport-technology.com.
The proposed airport in Pokhara is expected to be ready within a span of four years. The construction contract has been awarded to CAMC Engineering from China, under the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) model. The EPC model binds the contractor to deliver the project within the predetermined time-frame at the predetermined cost irrespective of inflation and other fluctuations.
Further to that, the online portal also adds that China will also provide assistance in developing Gautam Buddha Regional Airport in Lumbini. The regional airport currently has a 3,000 m runway which will be expanded and upgraded to meet the demands of the influx of Buddhist pilgrims to Lumbini, birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Ananda Prasad Pokharel, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal, explained that the two countries will be working in partnership to develop and expand the aviation industry and airports in Nepal. Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya, Secretary at the Ministry has also spoken of the Ministry’s ambition to upgrade Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Nepal’s one and only international airport, in a separate interview earlier in the week.
China currently supports infrastructure development programs all around the world including Maldives and Kenya.
