Eight Nepali Female Wrestlers selected for South Asian Games

For the first time , Nepal wrestling association selected 8 female wrestlers for the 12th South Asian Games in the women’s section. This is the first occasion that women’s national selection tournament was conducted, informed Bidhya Sagar Pokharel, coach as well as coordinator of the selection committee.

The wrestling event for women has been included for the very first time in SAG. Sumitra Rai from Illam stood first in the 48 kg event. Ishwari Thapa of Kanchanpur was selected for the 53 kg event. Similarly Laxmi Khatri of Kanchanpur, Kabita Pun of Rukum, Saptari’s Shanti Chaudhary, Lila Singh and Bhanu Thapaliya of Morang are selected for 58kg, 60 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg and 75 kg respectively. As 5 women were not challenged by any opponent in their respective weight category, they were selected without even competing. 11 of them competed for women’s events.

Meanwhile, Satyendra Prasad Yadav, the silver medalist of the 11th SAG, booked his place in men’s 125 kg event for the 12th SAG. Jaya Mangal Yadav of Parsa recorded win in 57 kg, Bara’s Ram Babu Yadav and Premalal Yadav and Bhagwat Sah of Rautahat were selected in 61 kg matches, Saroj Yadav of Parsa and Dhup Lal Prasad Yadav of Bara in 65 kg bouts. Likewise, Bheshraj Pandit of Tribhuvan Army Club and Sandesh Pandit of Bara recorded wins in 74 kg, Ramesh Gotame of Banke and silver medalist of 10th SAG Bunilal Yadav of Bara recorded wins in 86 kg section, while Sumir Sah of Parsa and Jitendra Prasad Yadav of Siraha won their respective fights in 97 kg event on the same day.
