Nepal Now, latest news updates

When Om Sagar Mishra, 28, submitted his picture for Mahashiva Ratri photo contest by hashtagging #NepalNOW #Mahashivaratri, announced earlier this month, he did it merely because he was an Instagram user and because he wanted to promote Nepal. He was happily surprised when his picture was selected best.

As the winner of the contest, Mishra was presented with mountain flight tickets for two people by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) CEO Mr. Deepak Raj Joshi. “This is the first photo contest I participated in, and this will be my first mountain flight,” said Mishra excitedly. He was looking forward to the experience and said he would invite his favorite person to be his guest on the flight.

Mishra, who lives in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, is studying Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT) at Islington College, Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu. An avid traveler and a lover of photography, Mishra who has visited several parts of Nepal believes that there is still a lot to see in the nook and crannies of each place.

Many interesting images are still not out in the mainstream photographs, he said, adding that social media and similar photo contests could provide one a platform to bring out such unseen pictures and stories. He appreciated the initiative of NTB and suggested similar photo contests for different tourism product areas of Nepal to create higher visibility of Nepal as a tourism destination on the social media.

The photo contest was conducted by NTB to promote the unique cultural festivals of Nepal through its online tourism recovery campaign NepalNOW, creating a platform for maximum user engagement for fresh and communicative user generated content.

The contest was announced for Mahashiva Ratri, from March 6-9, 2016, quoting prize of gift hamper with mountain flight tickets for a couple for the best picture posted online. Selection was done by jury team of five members from the tourism sector. The mountain flight tickets for two pax were sponsored by Buddha Air.
