Majority of tourists from third countries in the ACAP region

Tourists from third countries make up the majority of trekkers in Annapurna Trekking Route reports the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).

While 69,000 tourists from third countries visited the region in 2015, only 10,225 tourists from neighbouring SAARC countries trekked the route in the same period. This is in keeping with a similar trend in 2014, when 109,000 tourists to the ACAP region were from third countries and only 20,233 tourists were from SAARC.

This is despite the fact that India is one of the top two source market for Nepal and Indian pilgrims have been on the rise to Muktinath and Kagbeni, in Mustang district.

Tourists from SAARC also benefit from special rates as permits to trek in ACAP region cost RS 2000 per person for SAARC tourists while the same permits cost RS 4000 per person for tourists from third countries.

According to the ACAP, most of the tourists visiting the trekking route in 2015 were from Germany, Australia, Israel and the USA.
