Nepal announces ‘International Conference on Lord Buddha and Buddhism’

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ananda Prasad Pokharel, announced that Nepal is going to organize a three-day long International Conference on Lord Buddha and Buddhism on May 19-21 in Kathmandu.
The Government of Nepal is making a concentrated effort in promoting Nepal as a center for Buddhism and the international conference is just one of the many initiatives the government is taking to mark the upcoming Buddha Jayanti festival on May 21, in a grand way.
The Council of Ministers have formed a 501 member committee under Minister Pokharel’s leadership to make this conference a grand success. The government hopes that the conference will be successful in generating massive publicity for Nepal, and will help promote Lumbini, the birth place of Buddha as a site of historical, archaeological and cultural significance.
The government has invited UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Head of states of neighboring countries and Ministers for culture, high-level representatives from different organizations, Buddhist scholars and monks for their participation in the international conference.
