New York-based renowned fashion designer Prabal Gurung is planning a trip to Nepal. He tweeted “Counting days till I am in Nepal. A month to be precise. Can’t wait xPG” on March 8th to his 214,000+ followers.
Gurung is a Singapore-born Nepali fashion designer. He was raised in Kathmandu and is very proud of his upbringing. “The thing I feel most proud of though is how I’ve managed to highlight Nepal, where I grew up,” he told Vogue Magazine in an interview in 2011. Gurung launched his first eponymous collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2009, with a presentation at the FLAG Art Foundation.
He studied at New Delhi’s Institute of Fashion Technology and while he was there, he completed an apprenticeship at several local production and fashion houses and designed with Manish Arora at one point. After travelling for seven years, in 1999 he moved to New York where he attended Parsons School of Design and interned for Donna Karan. In his first year at Parsons, he was awarded the Best Designer Award at the annual Parsons/FIT design competition. After Parsons, he spent two years with Cynthia Rowley’s design team – before becoming the design director at Bill Blass. Gurung left after five years to launch his own collection. In 2010, Gurung became the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award and he received a nomination for the 2010 CFDA Swarovski Womenswear Award.
Gurung has dressed women such as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore and expressed a desire to dress Prince William’s wife, Catherine The Duchess of Cambridge. “The women I like dressing always have to have a strength of mind and real character,” he told Vogue Magazine in an interview in 2011. “It’s about the content of their heart and mind. Kate, like the First Lady, is representative of that ideal. She is very democratic in the way she dresses. She never behaves badly and we live in a world where people become famous for falling out of a taxi drunk. And then there’s Kate – poised, looking like she’s enjoying herself and holding onto her integrity.”
