Be blessed by a living goddess

Did you know that Nepal has a living goddess? The three ancient cities of Kathmandu valley – Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur – have their own living goddesses known as “Kumari”. They are chose at about age three and belong to Bajracharya caste. They are believed to be living embodiment of Goddess Taleju and are considered so, until they hit puberty. The Kumari of Kathmandu has long been associated with the Nepali Royal Family and access is very limited for the public. However, one can still visit their temples and if you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse during the Kumari Jatra, a festival where the goddesses are taken on a chariot- procession around the valley.

Camp on a white-sand beach

Yes, Nepal is a land-locked country but one can still enjoy some chill-time by the beach, despite the obvious lack of oceans. That is because Nepal’s rivers are flanked by clean, glittering sandy beaches. You can camp overnight on such beaches during or after your multi-day rafting and kayaking trip in rivers like Sun Kosi, Trishuli or Tamur. And the best part? You can bet you will have your stretch of the sandy beach to yourself, apart from a few friendly locals.

Nepal is perhaps best known as the backpackers dream and a budget travel destination. However, luxury tourism sector has been in development here since the 1960s. Nepal is synonymous with trekking holidays and rightly so. It is after all home to some of the world’s tallest mountains. This may come as a surprise to many but Kathmandu has what is considered by many to be South Asia’s best museum. Bonus points for the excellent restaurant on site that serves excellent Dal-Bhat.
