Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge 2016

Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge 2016 was held successfully on July 16,2016. The event was organised by Karma Foundation the philanthropy wing of SocialTours along with Cycle City Network Nepal. The event saw participation of over 2000 cyclists and was a huge success. Over 2000 cyclists rode the 50km,75km and 100km routes. It was a fundraiser event aimed to raise fund for the following causes:

1. ‘Medicare on Wheels’ An ambulance for the village of Gatlang,Rasuwa
2. ‘Help a Child get education’ a school at Sikherbesi, Nuwakot

Patan Durbar Square was the starting point of the event. The area bore a festive look with a mosaic of colors and riders from varied backgrounds assembled and eager to take on the challenge head on from as early as 6:30 am. Raj Gyawali from SocialTours one of the co-organisers flagged off the 100KM riders at 8 AM, followed by 75KM and then 50 KM. By 8:30 AM all the riders had left and the place bore a deserted look. The riders followed their respective trails with the help of international standard trail markers on the route or on an application specially earmarked for the event on Android. Both of these were a first in the history of cycling in Nepal.

The project ‘Medicare on Wheels’ will be carried out in close coordination with our Kora partners Cycle City Network Nepal. This project is expected to provide direct health access to about 1900 people of Gatlang and to approximately 400 other people from the neighbouring villages of Chilime and Syabrubesi.

The school at Shikherbesi, Nuwakot will benefit children from roughly 600 families. Working with Nepal Cyclist Ride to Rescue, The Kora organisers hope to raise enough funds to complete the school this calendar year. NCRR is building schools in Nuwakot under the slogan ‘7 schools in 7 weeks’. So far 5 of these schools have been completed and handed over to the concerned authorities. The building of the 6th school will be undertaken from the funds raised by Kora 16.
