Mallee women make a difference in Nepal

Australian women from Mallee are making a difference in Nepal by volunteering with Aussie Action Abroad, a community development organization that offers medical aid, education and construction in remote parts of Nepal.
Graeme Kent of AAA claims that Australians from rural parts of the country are well placed to share remote first aid and medical knowledge with Nepal’s rural communities.
One such volunteer was Jan Milliken who works for Woomelang and District Bush Nursing Centre and traveled to Nepal five years ago. Her stories have encouraged other women in their mid 40s to mid 60s to take such trips to Nepal.
Mallee in its own right has also suffered from crop losses for several years running. Despite the hardships though, locals gave generously to the earthquake appeal and raised $14,000 for Nepal in a single night.
One volunteer who traveled to Gorkha with the group from AAA was struck by the resilience and positive attitude of the Nepalese people.
“It makes you realise how lucky we are in Australia. People there have so little… One woman we saw was carting bricks. They work so hard.”
