Memories of Everest Base Camp Trek

Hiking through the Everest Base Camp trail over 22 days is without a doubt the highlight of our adventures to date. The simplicity of life, the hospitality of the locals and the incredible views of the Himalayas all along the path humble you in a way that nothing else can.
Beginning with the flight to Lukla, for us the adventure started straight away. As the plane soared through the clouds, the snow-capped peaks came into view and the excitement levels on our little 11-seater propeller plane escalated quickly. Flying high above the clouds, we had no idea what the next three weeks were going to have in store and as the plane touched down on the tiny Lukla runway, we very quickly realised we were a long way from anywhere.
Putting one foot in front of the other, hiking for up to eight hours a day, we passed through all sorts of terrain. We shared the path with other hikers, mules, shaggy yaks and porters carrying seemingly impossible loads. From the alpine surroundings in the lower altitudes to the barren mountain desert landscape above Pheriche, the scenery and views were jaw-dropping at every corner.
Trekking independently, we felt immersed in our surroundings. Walking through the Himalayas we didn’t see a vehicle for three weeks, except for the planes flying high overhead. Sunshine, heavy snowfall, high winds and torrential rain were all a part of our experience but nothing could dampen our spirits in what is without a doubt one of the most picturesque and beautiful areas of the world.
After reaching Kala Pattar at 5,550m, looking directly across at Mount Everest, we were on cloud nine. We virtually skipped down the mountain, so elated at what we had witnessed. So much so that we extended our trip, taking an alternate path back to Lukla where we opted to walk back to Shivalaya where we could catch a bus back to Kathmandu. And it was definitely the best decision we could have made.
Off the main trail, we discovered more about ourselves, and our resolve than we ever thought possible. We battled with bad weather, sickness and had some hairy moments crossing the Cho-La pass with not another person for miles but we came out unscathed and stronger for our efforts.
Would we do it again? Absolutely. The experiences we had in those three weeks will stay with us forever. The pure, raw, unmatched beauty of the Himalayas surrounding us everyday, the wildlife, the people and the pace of life; without a doubt, an experience of a lifetime. Trekking in Nepal is an experience of a lifetime and I will undoubtedly do it again. I got to learn about the country and its people and I loved every single second of it. We spent 22 days on the Everest Base Camp Trek and a further 10 days doing the Annapurna Base Camp trek all completely independently and it was amazing. Every single step you take is absolutely worth it and the best part is the reward you get for all your effort.
How can someone even want to miss the beautiful shots while trekking in Nepal? It was literally impossible for me to put down my camera. We hope that our pictures will inspire you to buckle up your shoes and take a break from your hectic schedule and just go for a heavenly experience like this. The plus point is that trekking in Nepal is extremely affordable and is infact much cheaper than what you think with one of the most rewarding experience you can ever have.
