Photo Essay on solar-solutions as Nepal rebuilds

Kristin Lau is a photographer who aims to raise social awareness about humanitarian and environmental issues through her work.

Lau’s partnership with Photographers Without Borders (PWB) led to her latest project with SunFarmer – a series of photo-essays of the communities in Nepal which is being rebuilt with solar technology. SunFarmer is a non-profit organization that delivers solar technology and solar energy solutions to local communities, school, hospitals and farms in developing countries.

“The first time I visited was in April 2012. I landed in Kathmandu on my birthday. My partner and I stayed in Thamel where we purchased our gear and equipment for an expedition trek. It was an incredible, life changing experience.” – Kristin Lau

The photographer’s work in Nepal focused on SunFarmer’s energy solutions and the impact it has on Nepal as it rebuilds from the devastating earthquake of April 2015. She also traveled to local communities to capture the hardships faced by people due to energy poverty and understand how solar energy is empowering their lives. She admits that the strength of character in people she encountered was the key element she tried to capture best in her photos.
