The Guardian to promote tourism in Nepal

The Guardian, a British national daily, is supporting the Great Himalaya Trails (GHT) as a platform for innovative and quality promotion of Nepal. The GHT links together less explored tourism destinations with the well-known trekking routes and is hoped will attract increased numbers of visitors to the Himalayan nation.

Tourism plays an important role in the Nepalese economy making up nearly 10% of GDP and employing close to 500,000 people, particularly in remote rural areas. Add in a natural disaster, such as the earthquakes that struck the country in April and May, and the role played by responsible tourism can be even greater.

Although most trekking areas, hotels and monuments were unaffected, visitor numbers have decreased by 60-80%. Most analysts believe that given Nepal’s beauty and allure, the sector will eventually recover, but that it could take several years.

The Guardian will communicate a clear message to the world that Nepal is as safe and stunning as ever. It is hoped this will give a much needed boost to the tourism recovery campaign.
