Things That Can be Expected From a Rural Homestay in Nepal

Homestay in Nepal is something many tourists want to experience. Being prepared can even enchance their experience. So, here are list of things that can be expected from a rural homestay in Nepal.

Meteor showers are awesome. Amanda writes : “Check with astrological sites to see if there will be anything spectacular while you are here in Nepal. Plan your homestay to coincide with such events.”
Always bring two gifts for the ladies in the house. If you bring just a single gift for the wife/mother, she may not be able to make it. Most of the villagers live in the traditional, extended family type home. Amanda writes : “Also, ask about appropriate colors if you are bringing scarves or other clothing. Red is not to be worn by widows in many places in Nepal and other countries in Asia. Scarves and the beautiful necklaces they sell near the temples make lovely gifts for $1-5.”
You might need to climb out the window and squat on the roof to use toilet at night during your stay at few places. Be prepared and act likewise 🙂
Always bring an extra pair of everything in case of emergency.
Be ready for an unusual amount of walking and choose the right footwear to avoid blisters.
You can actually meet the main Chief of the village and it’s worth making the effort to meet him. Amanda writes : “He will be more likely to speak English and can give you information about the village and the area. If you get into trouble he is the person you should run to. He will love to meet you. ”
Dal Bhat is the staple food of Nepal and it is served with love and genuine hospitable spirit.
Amanda writes : “Windows with glass are optional and the shutters work surprisingly well. You will need to keep them closed at night so critters do not fly, crawl, or climb in.”
Amanda writes: “The trekking trails are usually free of permits and can give some amazing views. Exploring with your homestay host family can be the highpoint of your vacation in Nepal.”
Your clothes will get dirty sooner as the houses will likely be made out of clay. Your dear hostess will be happy to do your laundry 🙂
Amanda personally recommends blending in and interacting with the local people as it will better your experience in Nepal. She says.”Grinding your own coffee beans for your morning coffee using a stone grinding wheel, helping to harvest tea or rice, helping with a village project, etc. will make your homestay experience very special. “
