As Nepal gears up to welcome back travelers what are the best things to do in the capital? Given that you will definitely spend some time of your holiday in the city. Matt Johnson provides the answers with his ‘Top 10 thing to do in Kathmandu’ article for The Daily Telegraph.

  1. EAT OUT

Obviously! Have momos and Nepalese dal-bhat. Cool down with a lassi or Gorkha beer. You can choose from a wide range of cuisines from Nepali, Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Italian, Japanese to Korean dishes.

  1. VISIT MONKEY TEMPLE

The world heritage-listed Swayambhunath Temple is a short drive west of central Kathmandu. Located on top of a hill, Swayambhunath stupa is a Buddhist shrine that offers panoramic views of the city. Monkeys rule here with them strutting their stuff with unabashed candor.

  1. SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP

You can shop till you drop in this city that is a mecca for shoppers. From handicrafts, pashminas, spices, jewelry, camping and trekking gear, the wide array of shops have got it all covered.

  1. ENTER THE GARDEN OF DREAMS

Amid the chaos of Kathmandu, a historic garden with Edwardian buildings offers the perfect escape to weary travelers. Take a book with you and sprawl on the lawns for an uninterrupted day of reading or take a stroll through the gardens and have a coffee at the adjoining restaurant.

Prepare for a few thrills along the ride. And DIY horns.

City rooftops are well used in Kathmandu, with roof top restaurants and jazz bars dotted around the city.

Kathmandu’s bustling central hub, and the site of the major annual festival praising rain gods, called Indra Jatra. Kathmandu Durbar Square is the ideal spot to people watch.

Various companies do scenic flights of the world’s tallest mountain. The views are incredible and if you are pressed for time, it makes for the ideal way to explore the moutains.

Want to whip up a local curry? Local companies offer intimate classes for hungry foreigners. It is a perfect opportunity to learn about the culture, interact with locals and have a delicious meal at the end of the experience.

For those wanting to explore deeper into the city’s maze of streets without getting completely lost, there are plenty of day tours to choose from. It can also be an efficient way to tour temples and navigate the central Thamel district, all in one day.
