World’s first’ travel blogger says that every day brings a new unexpected discovery in Nepal

Jeff Greenwald is world’s first travel blogger, who created his first travel blog in the year 1994. Like every traveller, he has done some crazily amazing things like crossing oceans on a container ship, rescuing a snow leopard cub in Tibet and a lot more. Greenwald first visited Nepal in the year 1979. He has written highly about Nepal in his blogs : Mister Raja’s Neighborhood: Letters from Nepal, Shopping for Buddhas, and Snake Lake.

Back in the year 1979, Greenwald met a young woman doctor while he was working as a visual artist in Europe. The woman doctor was on her way to study Ayurvedic medicine in Nepal and that led to his first expedition to Nepal. He joined her in Kathmandu and absolutely fell in love with Nepal.

On an interview with Kapil Bisht for Online Khabar, Greenwald has talked about the why he has always considered Nepal his second home. He says ,” From the first day I arrived, in the monsoon of 1979, I felt I had come home. Some reasons are obvious: the magnificent architecture, the geography, the generosity of the villagers, the beauty of the people. The almost tangible current of devotion among the Hindu, Buddhist and Vajrayana traditions. The wisdom of the elders, and the activism of the younger generation. Drums and harmoniums on the Chhetrapati bandstand at night, and the fusion bands at Jazzmandu.

I’m still captivated by the endlessly fascinating rituals and stories, which I tried to capture in books like Mister Raja’s Neighborhood, Shopping for Buddhas and Snake Lake. But especially—for me—there’s the fact that every day brings a new, unexpected discovery. I’m endlessly grateful for having stumbled upon one of the most complex, profound and beautiful cultures in the world.”

Greenwald thinks that the mountains, temples, festivals, culture, artwork, food and the people are the factors that makes Nepal a special travel destination. He says,”Nepali people are among the warmest, most generous, best-humored and engaging people in the world. My only wish is that somehow, someday, you elect the enlightened and unifying leadership you deserve.”
